There’s no business currently unaffected by digitalisation. Having digitalised its main processes, a firm faces an endless cycle of optimisation, driven by competition, customer expectation, and the usual bottom-line imperatives of cost-saving and increasing sales. Once on the digitalisation path, a firm can only move forward – and the main limiting factor is access to people and skills. How much of this can firms do themselves – and to what extent can they rely on outsourcing to help them cope with the challenges of digitalisation?
What do businesses and students need from higher education? IT comes first

John Dishman, pro-vice chancellor at Coventry University, talks to the BPCC's Michael Dembinski about the British approach to university education, and how it is suited to a global economy driven by digital change and constantly improving skills.
Poland's secondary education - though derided for its emphasis on rote learning - does well in global comparisons; in the OECD's latest PISA survey, Polish 15-year-olds have done better than their British peers in reading, maths and science. Poland's one of a handful of European countries that make the PISA global top ten. Yet Polish universities fail to rank in the global top 500, with only two (Jagiellonian and Warsaw) in the top 1000 (Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings 2022). My feeling is that Polish universities fail for the same reason that Polish schools succeed - rote learning. By the time they reach university, the student's mind is ready to turn learned facts into practical knowledge, learning how to think, analyse and question. How do you see the contrast between the two approaches to higher education?

As a result of the pandemic, the digital revolution has accelerated. This acceleration is evident in the extremely dynamic rate of growth in advertising investment, which has not been seen for a long time. Global digital ad spending was expected to grow by as much as 29.1% in 2021 to reach $491.7 billion1 , which already represents a 63% share of total global ad spending.
According to the data presented during the IAB Forum 2021, the value of the European digital advertising market amounted to €81 billion and was higher by 6.3% compared to 2020.

How can AI help those with diabetes?

Globally, over 400 million people have diabetes but as many as 46% remain completely undiagnosed and untreated. In fact, diabetes accounts for 12% of the world’s health expenditure, through the vast amount of research, analysis, and treatments, conducted and required today. Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications such as machine learning (ML) are promising significant breakthroughs in diabetes care. AI advances are relevant to those with diabetes, those who remain undiagnosed, their families, and their caregivers.
Years of research have gone into finding effective therapies that can delay the onset and slow the progression of diabetes-related complications. Studies have found that despite the associated risks such as kidney failure and the loss of limbs, a staggering 31% of patients discontinue their diabetes medication after the first three months. Caring for diabetics has traditionally been hampered by a lack of real-time data and knowledge to make informed decisions. We know there is a huge amount of literature in the field, and that people generate over 1 million gigabytes of health-related data in a lifetime. However much of this health data is unstructured, including the essential notes from doctors and nurses, images, and more recently data from the Internet of Things (IoT).
Advances in AI have made unstructured information more accessible to experts in the field, allowing them to collate meaningful data. ML algorithms alongside methods like computer vision can convert this data into useful and insightful information that can help make the decision process more efficient or even immediate. How can AI be used in diabetes care?
There are three primary objectives for using AI in diabetes care:
Spotting patterns in behaviour
Helping with the early diagnosis of diabetes
Provide personalised healthcare recommendations
We will look at each of these separately to show why breakthroughs in AI could be life-changing for so many people.
AI is used to spot patterns in behaviour that lead to either high- or low-blood sugar levels in diabetes patients. Continuous glucose monitors used by those with diabetes collect a huge amount of data that has previously not been used efficiently.
Those with Type 1 diabetes need to test blood-sugar levels many times a day to determine how much insulin they should inject. Until recently, the only way of doing this was by using a finger stick needle to obtain a blood sample. The continuous glucose monitor doesn’t require finger sticks. It is a small device under the skin that can simply be scanned using a smartphone app.
The device can change patients’ lives and enables healthcare providers the opportunity to analyse real-time data. The monitor automatically tells patients which direction their levels are trending to ensure they act appropriately. It can even predict the likely outcome of meals on their sugar levels.
The technology is still in relatively early stages, but as more data is acquired over the years, it could change the ways diabetes patients handle their medication, to better manage their condition and ultimately giving them a higher quality of life.

Digitalising business so as to work faster and better

Today’s business is a complex matter, especially if we compare it to business as we knew it a decade ago. Of course, profit, as was the case in the past, remains the main point of focus, but the idea of how to get it has changed drastically.
How’s that? I dare put forward the thesis that, before, the way to gain success was about working a lot, giving the most of yourself and your employees, to attain the greatest productivity in the shortest time.
And how is it now? It wouldn’t be wrong to say, the opposite. A successful company is one, where people don’t need to work as much, can compress their stress effectively, be creative and find their idea of how to get things done. How is it possible then, that such a company has any profit at all, not to mention the success? The right answer is – it’s a company that knows how to use the advantages of digitalisation.
Well-organised management is the key for every firm. No matter what a company does, there are concrete tasks to accomplish, there’s a team to coordinate and a schedule to follow. If there are too many of those, no surprise, the result is plentiful stress and disorder. Workers spend most of their time organising and planning, yet this methodology is not efficient, takes too long, and has to be repeated in the same range, on and on. Communication fails; fights are provoked. The day passes and we realise that we’ve not even touched the main course of our work, even if we come back home feeling more exhausted than ever. Also, the thought that the following day it’s going to be the same… doesn’t help.
It is more than obvious that the future market doesn’t want to work in this way.
Is there then a way to get to a scenario of the successful company from above? Of course, there is. All that’s needed is a good organisation arranged by a proper system. But not just any system. The system I have in mind uses solutions that don’t just support the company to organise the work, but are in effect a new, digital, employee – one who is the best in their field, always knowing the answer, never failing or leaving the team on its own.
Such a system would use machine learning (ML), which is essentially a new concept of artificial intelligence implemented in computer solutions to learn all the data input by users, and then create the best scenarios of reacting to each case based on the data. What does this mean in practice? For example, intelligently reading data from invoices and bills regardless of their format or other documents – that requires no template, easier translations for new languages or additional elements that need to be read. The first step towards saving time and doing everything better.
What would be the next step then? Automatic process management, intelligent decision support, flexible adjustment of the workday plan to the employee’s needs, effective selection of performance indicators and active monitoring of them through the Bpower2 system. And even automatic creation of a register of contacts with customers carried out by sales reps and assigning logs to concrete tasks or client profiles with appropriate annotation and integrated analyses and statistics reports about collected data in chosen periods.
Everything above is a part of a concrete business philosophy that Bpower2 calls Lean Office. It presents a way of rational resource management in a company. The main rules of Lean Office methodology are presented as goal-oriented action and a clear definition of the structure and processes of activities carried out by employees. The goal of those actions should reduce unnecessary, repetitive activities, create a clear organisation plan, eliminate daily mistakes and balance working time to the actual capabilities of an employee.

According to the Customer Service Excellence 2022 report prepared by Deloitte Digital every third customer expects a personalised approach, and getting such service has a greater impact on satisfaction than the time it takes to solve a problem. Respondents most often indicate self-service as the channel that will be most important in building a positive customer experience.
Conducted in the first quarter of 2022, the Customer Service Excellence survey was designed to understand the state of customer service, trends and differences between industries and regions. This year Deloitte Digital's survey also included an additional dimension, as respondents not only rated customer, but also employee satisfaction.
As the customer needs and expectations observed in our research are universal, they can be used to create global guidelines indicating the most important elements of the customer experience. It turns out that reliability, security and trust have the biggest impact on customer satisfaction, and the main obstacle to achieving it is an inefficient way of solving problems.

Tokenisation is one of those terms often heard in the same breath alongside such concepts as web 3.0, metaverse or blockchain. However, tokenisation is not just part of a vague concept, but is already being used in real business projects. Tokenisation is an expanding concept that is gaining in popularity and requires quite a bit of both technological knowledge and an understanding of how blockchain-based business projects work. Among many articles on the subject, including those written by lawyers, there’s surprisingly little information on the legal basis of tokenisation. One might even get the impression that tokens stored in blockchain are not subject to ordinary legal norms, but that some kind of virtual metaverse law applies to them.
However, tokenisation is really nothing new – it’s an old concept that has been given new life thanks to distributed-ledger technology (DLT).

Conducting business activity within digital economy is subject to many specific regulations such as data protection or consumer protection. The necessity to adjust legal regulations to a dynamically changing business environment has also been observed in the tax world.
Currently rules regarding the division of tax rights of multinationals firms doing business between different countries were designed many years ago, before the internet, and are becoming increasingly inappropriate considering the way many activities are conducted today. Covid-19 proved that it isn’t necessary to be present in person at work, or even to live in the same country as the employer, or to visit the doctor personally, or even to see real estate with your own eyes before buying it.
The value of some huge online businesses is often created not by the providers but by the users. This concerns in particular social media and marketplace websites where consumer reviews make them attractive and reliable, drawing the attention of clients and advertisers. And yet the country in which users are creating the value for the business does not have the right to tax the income generated thanks to them, unless the entity has a presence in that country thereby creating taxing rights based on current nexus rules. And generally, according to these rules, the company may be taxed in a given country provided that it is tax-resident in that country or has a permanent establishment there. Having users or clients or advertisers in given country does not necessitate the creation of a permanent establishment under classic rules. Therefore, it became necessary to provide a solution allowing so-called market jurisdictions to tax an appropriate part of the global businesses profits.

The fast-changing economic landscape just a few years ago only spoke of digital transformation as a curiosity or a prospect of the distant future. However, the rapid development of technology, feeding the public with revolution after revolution, boosted by two years of Covid-19, has made digitalisation a reality which every business must embrace.
What does this phenomenon entail? By its broadest definition, it is incorporation of computer-based technologies into an organisation's strategies, processes and products. Within the context of modern business, frequently the above definition encompasses its intended purpose as well – increased profits.
Overall, the digital transformation of an enterprise should be understood as the remodelling of the organisational culture within the business systems to take advantage of arising opportunities.
The pandemic has significantly accelerated the development of existing and the emergence of new projects saturating business digitally. Examples of highly successful digital transformation include Walmart, whose investment in e-commerce allowed it to overtake eBay in sales for the first time, or Nike's SNKRS app, which offers limited edition shoes only to users with the most interactions.
Nevertheless, the examples cited above – though spectacular in effects – should be considered fairly classic examples of digital transformation. The nobility among such projects is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into a business.
So far, no definition of AI has emerged that everyone would agree on. However, in terms of essence, it can be said that AI is the ability of a computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.

BBC Player to launch in Poland

BBC Studios launches video-on-demand (VoD) service with Canal+ Poland, continuing its long-term partnership
BBC Player has become available to subscribers of the Canal+ online streaming service from the beginning of June. Subscribers to the Canal+ satellite offer who use set-top boxes connected to the Internet will also have access to BBC Player from launch.
BBC Player will be the local on-demand destination for award-winning and critically acclaimed British drama, documentaries, pre-school, and inspiring lifestyle programming. Subscribers will be able to stream some of their favourite series from the BBC’s linear channel portfolio - BBC Brit, BBC Earth, BBC Lifestyle, BBC First and CBeebies, in addition to brand new programming.
With around 1,000 hours of content in its first year, BBC Player will give Canal+ subscribers the opportunity to delve deeper into the BBC content they enjoy and discover many new favourites. Programming at launch includes premium factual titles such as David Attenborough's Natural Curiosities and Mediterranean: Life Under Siege, documentaries such as Trump Takes on the World, compelling crime dramas like Unforgotten and classic comedies such as 'Allo 'Allo!.
In July new titles are coming to BBC Player: crime series “The Kettering Incident”, documentary “American Dynasties: The Bush Years – Family, Duty, Power” and the new season of “Where the Wild Men Are”.
Programming collections around the genres of travel, science, arts, history and current affairs will be regularly refreshed and join the service immediately after their linear premiere. Top drama titles include Time, Jimmy McGovern’s powerful depiction of prison life, starring Emmy and BAFTA winner Sean Bean and four-time BAFTA nominee Stephen Graham and intense investigative thriller Smother which looks at how secrets that families keep from each other can tear them apart.
Subscribers will also get to enjoy the latest season of the biggest motoring show Top Gear right after its premiere on BBC Brit and exclusive recordings of live concerts such as U2: Live in London.
The service will offer a choice of Polish voice-over and subtitles for all content, with the additional option of English subtitles on selected programmes.
Access to BBC Player will be granted to all new and current subscribers of the Canal+ online streaming service who subscribe to Canal+ channels. Subscribers of the Canal+ satellite offer, who have set-top boxes connected to the internet, will be able to access BBC Player service at no extra charge as part of decoded access from 1 June to 31 August. Then the offer will be available in selected Canal+ packages.
Zbigniew Pruski, BBC Studios’ commercial director for CEE said: “BBC Player is a curated on-demand service that complements our long-standing BBC channels that Polish audiences love. BBC Player takes our content and combines it with expert human scheduling and a product built on the BBC Group’s 15 years of on-demand experience. It is a pleasure to be launching this service with Canal+ and offer their subscribers a deeper BBC content offer to address the growing need for top-quality and trustworthy content to be available to audiences wherever they are and at a time convenient to them.”
“The inclusion of the VOD BBC Player library in the Canal+ offer is another step in building a wide range of high-quality productions from many different genres available in one place. We are also happy that we will be the first to offer access to the website on the Polish market” said Monika Kłosińska, programme purchasing director at Canal+ Poland.
The agreement to launch BBC Player was concluded as part of the renewal of the long-term agreement for the distribution of BBC Studios linear channels at Canal+ Poland.

The first of the 2022 season of regional conferences and business mixers celebrating the BPCC’s 30th anniversary kicked off on 18 May 2022 in Poznań, at the offices of the city’s Technology and Industry Park. The conference theme was Investment, Development and Management at a Time of Dynamic Change.
The event was opened by the BPCC’s CEO, Paweł Siwecki, and Katja Ložina from the City of Poznań.
The first presentation, covering Brexit and the changes to Polish-UK trade, was made by Michael Dembinski, chief advisor of the BPCC.Anna Wierzbicka manager of the foreign trade team at Santander Bank Polska talked about the current disturbances in the global supply chain and dealing with inflation in a time of war. Her colleague, Magdalena Kusa, presented tools that help firms find new business partners in export markets.
Keeping up with Poland’s ever-changing legislative environment, where new laws are rushed through parliament, leading to instability and a lack of predictability, was covered by Edward Nieboj, managing partner of Grant Thornton Poland. The challenging HR market was discussed by Sebastian Szurek, senior executive manager of Michael Page Polska, who set out up-to-the-minute strategies for attracting the best candidates and motivating teams at a time of rapid change.
The real estate market in Poznań and Poland is changing rapidly too! Michał Kuropieska, senior consultant, CBRE Poland, showed the main trends when it comes to new commercial property, availability, rental prices and vacancy rates, as they affect offices, warehouses and factories.
All the speakers then took part in a panel session, moderated by Michael Dembinski, in which they were joined by Wojciech Szafran, director of the Wielkopolska region for Raben Logistics, who answered questions about the current state of the logistics sector, with so many Ukrainian men returning home to fight. He said that before the war, one in three drivers of Polish trucks, vans and taxis were Ukrainian citizens. He also spoke about the impact of Brexit on logistics between Poland and the UK.
Three rounds of questions dealt with inflation and what firms can do to mitigate its impact on the bottom line, ESG and the ever-growing demands of compliance and the corporate imperative to drive green transformation, and finally how the e-commerce revolution is changing the face of the Polish economy.
After the conference, there was a change of venue to the Andersia Hotel for the Nice to See You Again! business mixer. Supported by Wyborowa Pernod Ricard, mixing exquisite cocktails for the guests, and sponsored by CBRE, Grant Thornton, Michael Page and Santander, BPCC members had a chance to sample the hotel’s famous food, swap business cards and talk business until the late evening.

The first presentation, covering Brexit and the changes to Polish-UK trade, was made by Michael Dembinski, chief advisor of the BPCC. Dawid Świątek, manager of the foreign trade team at Santander Bank Polska talked about the current disturbances in the global supply chain and dealing with inflation in a time of war. He also, presented tools that help firms find new business partners in export markets.
Polish businesses will soon have to adapt to electronic invoicing – preparing for the change will be a massive challenge, said Ewa Ogłozińska, capital markets expert from TMF Group. Imprecise wording of the law and a continually shifting regulatory environment will make it difficult for firms – especially SMEs – to have their internal systems working properly in time, she said.
The real estate market in Silesia and Poland is booming, with strong growth in the warehouse sector, said Tomasz Chojnacki, head of CBRE Poland’s Silesia Region, showed the main trends when it comes to new commercial property, availability, rental prices and vacancy rates, as they affect offices, warehouses and factories. However, building-material price inflation and the war in Ukraine, which has depleted Poland’s construction sector of many builders, cast clouds on the horizon, he said.
The speakers then took part in a panel session, moderated by Michael Dembinski, in which they were joined by Dominik Leszczyński, Dr Janusz Michałek, Krzysztof Tuszyński from Michael Page, and Mariusz Jankowski, head of the investor support department at the City of Katowice.
Questions dealt with inflation and what firms can do to mitigate its impact on the bottom line, green building and ESG, and implementation of electronic invoicing.
After the conference, the Nice to See You Again! business mixer took place in the mall section of the DL Tower complex; Dominik Leszczyński and Dr Janusz Michałek joined the BPCC’s Paweł Siwecki in welcoming the guests.
