The BPCC’s Real Estate & Construction Group was hosted by Cundall in its Warsaw office for a meeting focused on the technicalities of reaching carbon neutrality in buildings. The event offered a comprehensive breakdown of carbon footprints in buildings, both embodied and operational, and explored innovative approaches to achieving net zero.

Cundall has set itself the goal of designing only zero-emission buildings from 2030 on; from the client’s point of view, driven by the demands of ESG and non-financial reporting, this is a crucial deadline. The meeting showed the practical challenges involved in cutting CO2 emissions during the construction and use (and eventual disassembly) of buildings.

Attendees gained a deeper understanding of building carbon footprints, design for performance methodology, and the new NABERS building certification. Unlike standards such as BREEAM or LEED, which assess buildings on design, rather than their actual performance.

The event provided insights into Cundall’s approach to achieving net zero carbon, showing real-world examples, such as the Eden New Bailey building in Manchester, showcased the practical application of zero-emission principles.

The meeting was fully interactive, using Slido, which allowed participants to answer questions and engage with speakers to delve deeper into specific topics, such as energy efficiency and energy audits, passive design, use of innovative materials, sustainable design and construction, and certification and data collection, necessary for ESG reporting.

The meeting offered a sobering glimpse into a future where the construction sector will have to do far more to cut the carbon footprint of its products, driven by corporate clients demanding the highest standards of energy from the buildings they occupy.

The BPCC would like to thank Cundall for hosting the meeting.
