The great attribute of the human species is its resilience, adaptability and flexibility in times of change. While other species have declined or become extinct, the human species has managed to reach record numbers and the population continues to grow. Humans have become more adept at growing food, exploiting the natural resources around them and developing new technologies in medicine and science to improve health and life expectancy.

However, these life competencies are now needed more than ever before as the world changes and evolves at a faster pace with greater volatility and more inter-connectedness. The UN Sustainable Development Goals have all identified the urgent need for education systems to prioritise 21st-century skills, fostering critical thinking, adaptability, and social competencies.

At BSW, we take this challenge very seriously and we do not focus only on the academic but also on the key skills of Life Competencies. Life Competencies are the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that help individuals engage effectively with the world, reach their full potential, and navigate life’s complexities.

Developed by our parent company, International Schools Partnership, these competencies extend beyond academics, focusing on critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and emotional intelligence. To further enhance student development, we have integrated 15 Life Skills—practical, learned abilities—into our Life Competencies framework. Together, they equip students to become confident global citizens, ready to embrace challenges and seize opportunities.

Within these 15 life skills, we have the yellow category that relates to interpersonal skills. Schools are all about people and how they can work together, to collaborate and to build highly effective teams. We break these skills down so that they can be intentionally taught, they can be reflected on and they can be incorporated into classroom practice.

We believe that these are the skills that will empower pupils to be successful, happy, resilient and fulfilled in the fascinating world we live in.
