Olsztyn, 12 November 2024 – Hala Urania, a sports and entertainment facility, a showcase of Olsztyn, has undergone a thorough reconstruction, and significant expansion and reopened at the end of 2023. The investment of the Municipality of the City of Olsztyn, carried out according to the Urban Architect design by Mirbud as the General Contractor, has allowed, among others, to increase the capacity of the main arena audience and obtain additional service space and underground parking. The modernized facility has used numerous modern solutions, including seamless resin floors manufactured and supplied by Flowcrete, a leading expert in this technology.

Hala Urania was built in the 1970s. The architects Wiesław Piątkowski and Henryk Gotz were the project’s authors, and the characteristic element of its original shape was a futuristic dome. The facility included a large sports hall with a full-size court for handball, basketball, volleyball, floorball, tennis, badminton, and a small specialist hall for martial arts and corrective gymnastics. The auditorium comprised approximately 2,500 seats.

During the modernization, the building of Hala Urania was practically completely demolished, only the reinforced concrete structure of the main hall ring was preserved. The new facility, designed by architect Dorota Szymaniak-Urban from the Urban Architect studio, was put into use at the end of 2023.

After the reconstruction, the number of seats in the audience increased to over 4,000 in permanent and mobile stands. The complex includes two arenas – the main and the small – which contain full-size courts for volleyball, handball, basketball, and futsal, as well as smaller halls, designed for weightlifting and martial arts. The modernized Hala Urania also comprises office, conference, recreational and catering space, and an underground garage. In front of the building, there is a covered ice rink/roller rink, and a climbing wall on the patio of the facility.

The modernized Hala Urania is an entertainment and sports facility that uses high-quality technologies and building materials, such as Flowcrete seamless resin floors and products for impregnating and strengthening concrete surfaces, also manufactured and supplied by Tremco CPG Poland.

In the representative and communication spaces, including the promenade around the Main Arena on the ground floor and the first floor, on a total area of over 7,000 sqm, Peran STB epoxy-quartz flooring was installed in light grey colour. This durable and resistant flooring system based on clear epoxy resin and a mixture of coloured quartz sands is an original technology created by Flowcrete. It allows for an attractive aesthetic effect, and at the same time has high mechanical resistance, suitable for public facilities with high traffic.

The concept of the modernized Hala Urania that we prepared referred to the original, futuristic vision of the facility. In the representative part, we wanted to obtain a uniform floor, with minimal divisions on the surface, in a light, light-reflecting colour. The shade of the resin floor in the entrance and communication zone was created especially for this investment. The graphic effect meets our expectations – the floor beautifully reflects the light entering the interior through the openwork elevation, and at the same time contrasts with the dark ceiling, lit only by LED lights,” said architect Dorota Szymaniak-Urban, founder of the Urban Architect studio, responsible for the project of the Hala Urania expansion.

In the underground garage, on a surface of 3,000 sqm, a parking floor Deckshield by Flowcrete was applied. This solution is based on polyurethane resins and quartz sand. This flexible and watertight flooring system has high mechanical strength and chemical resistance, including to substances contained in fuels and other vehicle fluids, as well as de-icing salts brought onto the floor on tyres. Thanks to its anti-slip properties, the Deckshield floor increases the safety of parking lot users, and its bright, reflective surface optically brightens and enlarges the car park interior.

In addition to the Peran STB and Deckshield resin floors by Flowcrete, the Euco Diamond Hard impregnation and strengthening agent for concrete surfaces, also manufactured and supplied by Tremco CPG Poland, was also applied in Hala Urania stands on an area of 3,000 sqm.
