ESG ESG in practice: Scope 3 and business travel – challenges, methods, best practices

In view of the observed increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, the greenhouse effect – a mechanism involving the retention of part of the infrared radiation in the atmosphere and the consequent rise in the Earth’s average surface temperature – is intensifying. While this phenomenon is, under natural conditions, a crucial factor enabling the maintenance of life on our planet, its anthropogenic amplification disrupts climate balance, leading to advancing global warming processes and a growing frequency of extreme weather events.

Against this backdrop of global challenges, ESG – and in particular the reporting of emissions under Scope 3 – is gaining strategic importance, as it encompasses indirect emissions arising, among other sources, from business travel, which in many organisations constitutes a significant share of the overall carbon footprint. During the session, we will examine the challenges associated with calculating travel-related emissions, discuss available methodologies – including the GHG Protocol standard, online tools and carrier data – and explore how best practices can be implemented within companies to enhance the reliability, transparency and effectiveness of both emissions reduction and reporting.

Programme:

1. Introduction – Ilona Chodorowska, BPCC

2. Adrem
How to calculate Scope 3 of the ESG report with particular focus on business travel

  • Value chain emissions – the importance of partnerships:
Discussion on the role of collaboration with suppliers and business partners to obtain reliable Scope 3 emissions data.
  • Materiality analysis of Scope 3 emission categories:
Overview of Scope 3 emission categories with particular emphasis on business travel, transportation, and outsourced services.
  • Business travel in the context of GHG emissions:
When business travel becomes a significant component of the carbon footprint and how to effectively monitor it.
  • Calculation methods, practical approach, and case studies:
Presentation of available emission calculation methods (e.g., according to the GHG Protocol), online tools, data from carriers, and examples of corporate implementations.

3. Lufthansa
What actions is Lufthansa taking to reduce its carbon footprint and comply with new requirements?
Presentation of the decarbonization strategy of one of Europe’s largest airlines. Discussion on investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), route optimization, fleet modernization, and offsetting initiatives.

4. Hilton
Internal systems and procedures to reduce emissions at Hilton properties; methods for calculating the carbon footprint of events and conferences held at their venues
Overview of solutions implemented in Hilton hotels regarding energy efficiency, water management, and waste management. Additionally – how Hilton measures and reports emissions related to event organization, including tools available to clients.

5. BISSOLE
Practical approach to calculating the carbon footprint of business travel, especially flights, and CSR-supporting activities for clients
Presentation of tools and methods used by BISSOLE to calculate emissions from business travel. Discussion on data integration from booking systems, client reporting, and CSR initiatives supporting emission reduction and offsetting.

6. Discussion Panel: Q&A with Speakers
