BPCC supports Habitat ReStore!

Tonight we will be asking for donations for  the ReStore charity shop which Habitat for Humanity Poland plans to open early in the New Year.

Habitat for Humanity Poland is a non-profit housing organisation which responds to the shortage of housing for disadvantaged people through various projects, including construction of new houses, rehabiliting apartments and residential facilities for vulnerable youths and adults, microloans, energy-efficiency training, housing research and advocacy. It was founded in Gliwice in 1992 as the first Habitat for Humanity office in Europe and so far has helped about 4,000 people in housing need. Its projects have been supported by over 2,000 volunteers, including employees of numerous local and international businesses. It is part of Habitat for Humanity, a global network of non-profit housing organisations working in around 70 countries.  Habitat's vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

The idea for launching the first Habitat ReStore in Poland is based on an effective model of a social enterprise that has been already tested in the US and Canada, where over 1,000 enterprises operate under the ReStore brand. Habitat ReStores offer low-cost building materials, appliances, furniture, household goods and other new and slightly used items donated by individuals and companies. As well as offering products for sale, they also serve as community centres, promoting the Habitat mission, and include volunteers in their operations.

The money raised by Habitat ReStores helps families build a decent and affordable place to call home. When the items donated to ReStores are sold, the money allows Habitat for Humanity to support families in housing need to achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better future.

The first Habitat ReStore is to be opened in Warsaw. Habitat for Humanity Poland has already chosen a building where the ReStore will be located. The pro-bono support for ReStore in architectural design, legal aspects, as well as the first donations of goods to be sold were declared by a leading architectural company, an international legal corporation and other business partners.

Donations from the BPCC Gala Dinner will be spend on:

  • Delivery vehicles for transporting goods

  • ReStore fit-out: shelving, cash registers, software, computers, safety and security equipment, HVAC installation, advertising signs.

  • To keep the project on schedule, we need to collect 100,000 zlotys by the end of this year. This will allow us to open the Habitat ReStore in Warsaw in early 2018.
