In terms of numbers of castles and palaces Lower Silesia ranks
pretty highly not just in Poland but also in the whole of Europe.
There are old castles, beautifully renovated palaces and numerous
secret underground tunnels. There are the mysteries of the Sowie
Mountains, the Cistercian Route, the green forests of Lower Silesia
Bory Dolnoląskie, extensive hunting grounds, and towns boasting
monuments from the middle Ages. When talking about the attractions of
Lower Silesia the landscape plays a considerable role, from its flat
plains to the hills of Wagers Trzebnickie and Przedgórze Sudeckie and
the lofty Sudeten Mountains with the highest mountain in the Karkonosze
Mountains, Śnieżka. And let’s not forget the spa towns, some of the
oldest in Poland and Europe.
Undoubtedly, Wrocław is the cultural, intercultural and economic
capital of the region. The city, with a population of almost 650,000,
boasts historical treasures dating from early Medieval times to the
present, and hosts many cultural events in theatre, film and music,
including the Vratislavia Cantans, Jazz nad Odrą festival (Jazz on the Oder Festival), Futuralia and more.
The long and rich history of this region of Poland has left a permanent
trace, visible in its diversified architecture and secular and sacral
monuments, and also in its culture and cuisine, here where Polish,
Czech, south-eastern German, Silesia and Galician traditions mingle and
match.
The natural wealth of Lower Silesia is complemented by numerous
protected areas, nature reserves, landscape parks and national parks.
Two national parks have been created in the Sudeten Mountains covering
the most fascinating and precious parts of the Karkonosze and Stoowe
Mountains – the Karkonoski and Stołowe Mountain National Parks.
The natural beauty of Lower Silesia can also be discovered in its
numerous landscape parks, among which Przemkowski, Dolina Baryczy
(Barycz Valley) with its bird reserve, and Milickie Ponds Nature
Reserve, famous for its large fish ponds and the biggest bird sanctuary
in Europe, are visited by huge numbers of tourists. In addition there
are the enormously popular Chelmy, Rudawski, Śnieżnicki and Ślezański
mountain parks.
Lower Silesia is well prepared for tourists, and the variety of
accommodation and places to eat is great. You can stay in medieval
castles, renovated palaces, romantic cottages and beautiful spa
buildings. The local authorities and communities do their best to make
your stay here unforgettable.
