On 2nd December 2005 the World Council of the International Chamber of
Commerce (ICC) in Paris appointed advocate Piotr Nowaczyk as a member
of the International Court of Arbitration at ICC for a second 3-year
term of office (2006-2008). Piotr Nowaczyk is a partner at the Warsaw
offices of the international law firm Salans.
The International Court of Arbitration at ICC is the only institution
of its kind. It should not be confused with an arbitral tribunal, i.e.,
with a panel of arbiters appointed to resolve a specific case. There
are as many arbitral tribunals appointed at ICC as there are cases,
which means that the number reaches several hundred a year. Meanwhile,
there is only one International Court of Arbitration at the ICC. It is
currently composed of a Chairman, 9 Deputy Chairmen and 116 members
from 86 countries.

An arbiter is appointed to resolve a single, specific dispute, while a
Member of the Court is nominated for a 3-year term of office. Piotr
Nowaczyk is the second representative of Poland in the history of ICC.
Andrzej Kąkolecki, a diplomat, legal counsel and former director of the
Paris branch of Pekao SA, was his predecessor.
The International Court of Arbitration at ICC is still the biggest and
most important arbitration institution in the world. Last year, it took
on 561 cases for consideration, there are 1110 cases pending before it,
involving 1682 parties. 952 arbiters from 61 countries issued
decisions. Trials were concluded in 49 countries. Over the last five
years, there have been 18 arbiters selected from Poland, 52 Polish
parties participated in arbitration and Poland was selected 5 times as
the venue of arbitration. These figures are all part of an upward
trend. |
