Oxford and Cambridge meet for the first time in Poland |

A mirror Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge universities - the
annual world-famous competition between the two universities' rowing
teams will take place in Bydgoszcz on the Brda river, on Saturday, 16
September 2006.
The traditional annual competition between the Oxford and Cambridge
universities rowing teams is world-famous. The Boat Race is held in
London, on the river Thames.
We are pleased to announce that a mirror Boat Race between Oxford and
Cambridge universities will take place in Bydgoszcz on the Brda river,
on Saturday, 16 September 2006.
In previous years either Oxford or Cambridge rowers took part in the
annual XV Wielka Wioslarska regattas on the Brda, competing against
Polish crews. This year will mark the first instance of the two famous
British university crews visiting Poland to compete against each other.
As for the history of the previous international sporting exchange, the
first boat race between representatives of the British and Polish
universities took place in September 2004 in Bydgoszcz, as part of the
annual Wielka Wioslarska regatta. The representatives of the Bydgoszcz
Academy competed against the Cambridge University rowers, and won the
race. Cambridge avenged their defeat in March 2005, when the Polish
rowers raced against Cambridge on the Thames and lost.

The following year's Wielka Wioslarska regatta (October 2005) hosted
the Oxford University team. The rowers from Oxford lost in Poland but
subsequently, and narrowly, won on the Thames on 19 March 2006, when
the team from Poland visited them. www.boatrace.ih.pl
The Wielka Wioślarska o Puchar Brdy rowing regatta is one
of the most significant rowing events in Poland. The regatta is held
annually in Bydgoszcz on the Brda. So far there have been fourteen
regattas held over the last years, each attracting international
competitors and spectators. More information and photographs can be
found at www.wielkawioslarska.byd.pl
The main organisers of the international rowing exchange are two
Bydgoszcz-based organisations: the Polish-British Foundation and
International House. More information about their activities can be
accessed through their websites at: www.pbf.ih.pl
