Report on Specialist Labour market

The report on „Specialist labour market Q3 2008” was drawn up on a basis of the survey including 54 858 job offers, which were placed at Pracuj.pl in Q3 2008. The survey solely refers to corporation job offers provided for university degree employees. It does not contain offers submitted by public offices or proposals aimed at students or manual workers.

  • Slight drop in the total number of job offers as compared to Q2 2008
  • The largest number of job opportunities appeared in technological, IT, sales and production departments
  • The least number of vacancies came from HR, translation and legal departments
  • Continuous decline in the number of job offers from abroad

SLOWDOWN ON THE LABOUR MARKET

In Q3 2008, despite of a slight decrease in the total number of job offers, the demand for commerce and sales staff increased anew. Employers operating in this sector provided over 14 job offers. As compared to the Q2, more vacancies were also released to the applicants keen on the financial industry. A decline in the number of job offers resulted from the characteristics of the holiday time, yet it might be a first sign of changes, which are expected to affect the labour market as a consequence of the global economic crisis. These are the key conclusions on “Specialist labour market Q3 2008”, a quarterly report, drawn up by Pracuj.pl consultants.

In Q3 2008 Pracuj.pl published, in total, 54 858 job offers.

In July, August and September 2008 telecommunications and hi-tech reported a slight increase in demand for candidates. However, the highest percentage rise in job offers was seen in marketing, media and advertising industries as well as education. Perhaps, growing demand for applicants from the latter sector was influenced by the beginning of the school and academic years.

Surprisingly, within the analysed period, the largest percentage fall was reported in tourism, hotel industry and gastronomy, which generated nearly 30% less vacancies as compared to Q2 2008. Presumably, in the peak of the holiday time, travel agencies, hotels and restaurants were more prone to recruit employees themselves.

Moreover, the pharmaceutical and FMCG industries generated a bit lower number of job offers. A drop in the amount of vacancies was also seen in building and real estate industries, which reported an upturn in the preceding quarters. It may confirm rumours about construction workers coming back from abroad, who joined Polish building companies.

Sales departments grow stronger

The survey on job offers by the department proves that, in the summer and early autumn, the largest demand for candidates came from sales departments with as many as 4 out of 10 job opportunities provided for salespeople and sales assistants. The second place was occupied by job offers from technological departments, whilst the third went to IT. In both cases, the overall number slightly fell, as compared to Q2.

What is more, an inconsiderable drop in job offers was reported in accountancy, customer service and logistic departments. Except for the translation department, the least number of vacancies were offered by quality assurance and legal departments. The similar trend affected HR departments, which have generated the lowest rate of offers since the beginning of 2008.

It’s better to be a specialist or a CEO

In the last quarter, the largest number of offers covered specialist positions constituting more than ¾ of all job opportunities. However, the more dynamic growth referred to senior management posts. Candidates fond of this sort of career could expect at least 30% more offers than a quarter before.

In Q3 2008 the lowest number of job offers was given to apprentices and trainees, with the highest percentage decrease within this area. It arises from the fact that large corporations, which are used to looking for trainees through the Internet, closed their recruitment process for training programs before holidays.

If you look for a job, do it in Mazowsze Province, not abroad

The survey on number of job offers by the province indicates that the leading position of Mazowsze remains safe. This is the region generating every fourth job recruitment opportunity. Dolnośląskie, with over 5.5 thousand offers, was ranked second, while Śląskie, providing only 300 offers less, came third.

The number of job offers from abroad continues to fall. In Q3 2008 they constituted barely 2% of total job opportunities placed at Pracuj.pl. Therefore, they dropped down to the last position of the comparison by the province.

Pracuj Index in Q3 2008

Pracuj.pl consultants carried out a survey on candidates’ interest in job offers referring to particular professional expertise. The ratio of job offers and applicants is expressed by the Pracuj Index.

In the last quarter significant recruitment difficulties appeared in the companies searching for technological, IT, sales and manufacturing specialists. As far as these categories are concerned the number of job offers soared really high, while the candidates’ interest seemed relatively low.

In the case of these areas of expertise you could name it an employee-oriented market - it was more frequent that the applicants could sort out among vacancies and imposed the terms of employment.

The lowest negative Pracuj Index results and thus the least recruitment shortages were reported within translation, HR and legal departments. In addition, it was relatively easy to find candidates for logistic, quality assurance and marketing departments.
These areas of expertise could be considered an employer-oriented market.
