Law and Justice party (PiS) candidate Lech Kaczyński defeated Civic Platform (PO) rival Donald Tusk and will be Poland's president for the next five years.
The final result after all votes were counted was 54.04% for Kaczyński and 45.96% for Tusk. Turnout was 50.99%. The two faced off on 23 October in a second round after Donald Tusk won the first on 9 October, ahead of Kaczyński and 11 other candidates.
Kaczyński takes over as President of the Republic of Poland from Aleksander Kwaśniewski on 24 December, and will hold office for five years.

The Law and Justice candidate won more votes from the older, rural and less-well educated electorate, winning in the east of the country. Donald Tusk's electorate was mainly urban, young and better educated, living in western Poland. |
