This obliges us to operate in a responsible manner taking into account all stakeholders groups. For our employees it means that we act consistently to improve health and safety conditions at work and to develop their talents and skills. Outside the company it means our engagement in reducing our environmental footprint and supporting local communities. ArcelorMittal Poland implements state-of-the-art technologies, invests in installations that reduce our impact on environment, and supports institutions and associations acting on behalf of residents of the cities we operate in. Our volunteers join the initiatives and also come up with lots of ideas of their own. Below are a few examples of the initiatives we support.
Mini-grants at Dabrowa Górnicza and Kraków
Programme of grants prepared by the company is addressed towards NGOs acting on behalf of residents of Dąbrowa Górnicza and Kraków.
“Our grant programme is a reply towards the needs of residents. We were surprised by a wide variety of projects, which covered different age and social groups,” says Karolina Muza- Adamiec, head of the Corporate Responsibility (CR) team at ArcelorMittal Poland. All these projects covered the areas of activities, the company support. These areas are: health, safety, ecology, sport, education. ArcelorMittal Poland spent 100,000zł for mini-grant programme in Dabrowa Górnicza and the same amount of money for Kraków. In Dabrowa Górnicza out of 51 projects, 13 were selected and in Kraków out of 51, 9 projects received financial support.
Safety is our priority – this motto determines every activity and decision taken by the company. Cooperation with fire brigades is proof that we take this motto seriously. As part of this cooperation we purchased fire engines or equipment.
ArcelorMittal Poland tries not to limit its activities in scope of environment protection towards investments, the aim of the company is to educate in this area as well. That is why we are very often partners or initiate actions of cleaning green areas, tree planting, waste-paper collection or even exchanging old stoves for new, cleaner-burning models.
Tomorrow without smog
The cooperation for cleaner air in Krakow is an initiative of the Krakow plant of ArcelorMittal Poland and the City Hall of Krakow. Since the beginning of the year, the company has been paying a 150zł bonus to residents who after 1 January 2018 decided to replace their old stoves fired with coal or wood for a low-emission heating source subsidized by the city office.
The Krakow plant has so far collected almost 600 old stoves, which it gradually melts into bicycle stands. After cleaning and removing all non-metallic elements from one stove, it was possible to make on average two stands, each weighing 30 kilograms. The production of the first batch of racks began in September and lasted over a month. The first 120 bike racks are mainly for use in Krakow's schools, but we are going to produce more from the other stoves, because the exchange of stoves significantly accelerated before the new heating season. This initiative also shows that steel accompanies us from dawn to dusk and that it can be processed indefinitely.
We support few strategic areas investing in local communities, out of which education is the leading one. We selected it not only because it has enormous role in shaping modern society but also to meet the expectations of local authorities and communities. Over 70 educational projects carried out in primary schools, universities, kindergartens and even creches, makes ArcelorMittal Poland an active participant of community life and pioneer in case of certain educational solutions at Silesia, Małopolska and Opolskie voivodships.
Sport is equally important to ArcelorMittal Poland as education or health promotion. Our aim is to encourage our employees, their families and local communities to active lifestyle. Our flagship initiative in this area is half-marathon in Dabrowa Górnicza, which we sponsor but also take part in. In this year’s run, about 70 employees of ArcelorMittal Poland enrolled.
For many years we’ve been supporting and organising volunteering initiatives. The main areas we are active are meetings with senior citizens, support for disabled people, support for animal shelters, repair works. Employees engaged in local initiatives may count on our support which has various forms. We might support such initiative in terms of organisation, buy company gifts or cover the costs connected with volunteering activity. Quite recently our volunteers organised a computer training course for people over 50, which covered the basic element of work with computers. Another group helped in cleaning the area around day-care centres in Chorzów or helped to plant trees and flowers around a hospice for cancer patients.
